REF 1715  Procession of Apollo

Cameos are often referred to as miniature sculptures and this cameo is a superb example of the almost three dimensional nature of the glyptic art. Carved from Horned Helmet shell in a high-carat gold mount with applied gold bead-work decoration, circa 1840, the carver has utilized the layers in the shell to create a scene in three strata, with movement and fluidity. The subject is Phoebus Apollo Preceded By Aurora after a ceiling fresco in the Rospigliosi Palace, Rome by Guido Reni [1613]. Phoebus Apollo, the Sun god, ascends in the chariot of the Sun, preceded by the Goddess of Dawn, Aurora and the Genius of Light, whilst the Seasons and nymphs dance in  attendance upon his chariot. The cameo measures 7 cm by 5.8 cm [ 2 and 1/4 inches by 2 and 1/4 inches]. A fine example of cameo engraving in immaculate condition.
