REF E4A   Stuart Crystal Amatory Slide

A late 17th century Stuart crystal amatory slide, intended as a betrothal or marriage gift. The gold and silver slide contains a compartment with a ground of cerise-pink foil, overlaid with duck-egg blue enamel and the device of a golden Cupid holding a bow and hovering above a plinth on which rest three hearts. The slide is inscribed in gold lettering with a rebus motto : with this + [image of cherub's bow] + sve [Latin for 'of his'] : 'with this bow of his'. The compartment is covered by densely faceted rock crystal and bordered by foiled topaz and Scottish river pearls. To reverse the slide is covered in botanical enamelling, in shades of duck-egg blue, black and rose-pink. It measures one inch by just under one  inch. It is in extremely good condition for its age, there is one later replacement slide fitting to reverse, which has been done sympathetically so as not to disturb the lovely original botanical enamel work.
