Ref  FWLB8   Princess Charlotte of Wales

A gold pendant, circa 1818, containing a watercolour on ivory miniature commemorating the death of Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales [1796 -1817]. Charlotte, the heir presumptive to George IV, wed Leopold Saxe-Coburg, later King of the Belgians, and in November 1817 died giving birth to a stillborn son. The nation was plunged into a period of intense mourning for its beloved princess, the Diana of her day. This miniature is surrounded by a black enamelled frame and pearls, indicative of mourning and tears, and surmounted by a red enamel royal crown. Charlotte is portrayed as a beautiful young woman, with her customary floral headdress. A poignant and beautiful mourning miniature.
