Ref BH5    Scottish Clan Brooch

Silver Scottish clan brooch, circa 1890 - 1900, for Clan Macpherson, a Highland Scottish clan. The brooch displays a cat rampant, with the clan motto : Touch not the cat bot a glove. 'Bot' means without. If the cat is 'ungloved' then its claws are unsheathed. The motto warns that one should beware when the wildcat's claws are 'without a glove', a metaphorical warning to other clans to beware of challenging the Macphersons. The brooch is stamped to reverse with the retailer's mark - Medlock's of Inverness, leading purveyors of Victorian highland clan jewellery.
