A superior example of a Stuart crystal memento mori slide, circa 1680. The engraved high carat gold slide encloses a compartment with a ground of woven brown hair. Surmounting the hair is a complex tableau with five colourful enamel memento mori devices – a skull, an erect skeleton, gravedigger’s tools, an angel and a winged hourglass [tempus fugit]. To the centre gold wirework initials : ED. The compartment in covered by a densely faceted rock crystal. The slide measures 3/4 of an inch by 2/3 of an inch and is of very fine quality and immaculate.
