17th century rock crystal ring
An mid-17th century ring, of high carat gold with black enamel decoration on the engraved shoulders and filling the arcaded sides. The hexagonal bezel is set with a pyramid natural rock crystal, the ring’s original stone. At this time stones were believed to have apotropaic powers and rock crystal was thought to protect the wearer from the Evil Eye. The ring is size I [US 4 and 1/4]. It is in fine and most wearable condition. For a ring of similar form, dated 1610, see the example on page 312 of Scarisbrick’s Rings Jewelry of Power, Love and Loyalty.
