Ref  TL2  Peter Nouaille

A fine quality example of a mourning hoop, dated 1809. The ring is inscribed on the outer hoop between milled borders with the details of the deceased : Peter Nouaille Esq. Ob 7 Dec 1809 AET 86. To interior a full set of English hallmarks for 1809. Peter Nouaille was a Hugenot silk mill owner and an active participant in the abolition of the slave trade. From The Gentleman's Magazine : Peter Nouaille Esq. possessed a highly cultivated mind, had spent much time in Italy and returned from his travels abroad as one of the most accomplished gentlemen of the old school. His house was constantly frequented by the most distinguished literay characters of the time, both foreign and native. The ring is size L [US 5 and 1/2 ] and the hoop is just under 1/3 of an inch wide. Substantial and immaculate.
