A high carat gold mourning ring, circa 1840. The outer hoop is enamelled in the Greek key design. In ancient Greece the Greek key was a symbol of infinity and the eternal flow of things. The ring is also inscribed in enamel with the word AEI, a Greek word meaning ‘always and forever’. Old-cut diamonds ornament the whole hoop. The ring is size J [US 4 and 5/8] and the hoop is 1/8 of an inch wide. Unusual and immaculate.
