Octopus ink alphabet tokens

Georgian spelling alphabet tokens, circa 1820. These were used to teach the alphabet to children in the 19th century. They are double-sided tokens with upper and lower case letters inked on either side. As they are bone not ivory there are natural flecks in the organic material. The letters are painted in octopus ink, so must not come into contact with water. They each measure 1 and 1/4 inches by 1 and 1/4 inches and come pierced for suspension with a gold loop. These are the letters available : D F I K O Q R S U X Y.
