An Essex crystal of a child

An Essex crystal of a young child

A most extraordinary reverse intaglio carving set to a high carat gold pendant, circa 1890. I have had reverse intaglios of various insects and animals but have never seen one in human form. The technique of reverse intaglio crystal carving required great skill, first carving out a domed rock crystal in intaglio and then painting the carving in fine detail. The effect achieved is photo-realistic. The child with brown hair is dressed in blue velvet with a finely detailed lace collar and pensive face. The pendant measures 1 and 1/4 inches by 3/4 of an inch and is in its original fitted case. Intaglio carving of the finest quality, immaculate.
