Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, Princess of Wales [1719 -1772]
A late 18th century watercolour miniature of the young Augusta, Princess of Wales, set to a gold pendant mount and under domed crystal. Princess Augusta, daughter of Frederick II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, was sent to England at the age of 16 to marry the 29 year old Frederick, the Prince of Wales, eldest son of George II. She arrived unable to speak a word of English and clutching a doll. The marriage appears to have been a cordial one and Augusta bore the prince nine children. Frederick’s untimely death at the age of 44 before becoming king meant that Augusta was only one of three Princesses of Wales who never became a Queen Consort. The pendant is 1.5 inches long and 1 and 1/8 inches wide. Very finely executed miniature, immaculate condition.
