Jean Louis’ moth

Jean Louis’ Georgian paste moth

A late 18th century moth brooch, silver close set with foiled, black dot colourless paste, circa 1780. Each paste has been individually painted with a black dot at the base, to give a sense of depth and emulate diamonds. The 18th century fascination with moths was part of the golden age of natural history, with keen interest in scientific classification, metamorphosis and exotic species. This is a special piece, it is from the collection of the late Jean Louis Chameroy, a connoisseur collector and esteemed colleague. He meticulously curated a selection of 18th and 19th century jewels, collated over three decades. Jean Louis collected only the best examples of Georgian jewellery and he had a penchant for fine early paste. The brooch measures 2.5 inches by 1 and 1/4 inches and is in its original fitted case. It was sold in the Jean Louis personal collection sale at Woolley and Wallis in October 2023. Super quality, immaculate.
