A 17th century slide, circa 1688, commemorating the life of Lady Margery Dolman. Sir Thomas Dolman, [1622 – 1697)] was an English landowner and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1661 to 1679. Dolman married Margery Hobday, daughter of John Hobday of Thornton, Warwickshire in 1651. They had five sons and three daughters. Margery died on 21 January 1687, aged 54. The high carat gold slide is set with a watercolour portrait of the lady with flowing locks and wearing a royal blue gown, under crystal. The reverse is beautifully botanically enamelled in asymmetrically arranged feathers of pale pink, pale green and black against a white enamel ground. Most unsually the reverse is also inscribed with the sitter’s name, La : Doleman [sic]. The slide measures one inch by 3/4 of an inch wide and is of very fine quality.
