Pastoral idyll

Pastoral idyll

A most unusual Georgian mourning ring, circa 1780. The high carat gold shank supports a compartment with a weave of blonde hair. Surmounting the hair is the tiniest micro ivory carving of a shepherd and a sheep, within a beribboned frame of minute glass pearls. The border of the ring is composed of tiny seed pearls. The scene is covered by a dome crystal. In pastoral elegies the deceased was often depicted as a shepherd, whatever his role may have been in life. The ring is size J [US 4 and 5/8] and the head of the ring measures 1 and 1/4 inches by 3/4 of an inch. Quite incredible work on such a microscopic scale, unable ever to be replicated.
