Portuguese Chrysoberyl Ring
Fine quality Portuguese chrysoberyl ring of a particarly neat and wearable size, late 18th century. The high carat gold engraved shanks supports a bezel pavé-set with vibrant, foiled sea-green chrysoberyl in closed back settings and with gold bead detail. The close setting of the gemstones creates the illusion of an unbroken mass of light. The ring is size O [US 7] and the head of the ring measures one inch by 2/3 of an inch. Particularly vibrant chrysoberyl, immaculate and origianl condition. For similar examples see plate 123 in D’Orey’s Five Centuries of Jewellery National Museum Ancient Art Lisbon [former convent collections] when such rings were presented as dowries to convents by the families of nuns entering the order.
