A rare French rebus ring, circa 1790. A rebus is a puzzle where words are represented by images or letters to convey a secret message. The ring is gold, the tapering bifurcated shank supporting a plaque set with a weave of hair surmounted by ivory discs inscribed in sepia : L C M E under table-cut crystal. The rebus here is elle ç’est aimée – she is loved. This ring started life – as a ring. When I purchased it someone had taken the ring shank off and made it into a brooch. It took me some time to find the appropriate late 18th century French ring shank to convert it back to its original form. The ring is size P and 1/2 [US 7and 3/4] and the head of the ring measures 1 and 1/8 inches by 3/4 of an inch. Fine quality, substantial and immaculate.
