I call these Regency mourning hoops ‘crunchy’ as they are so beautifully crafted and of such exceptional quality. This ring is 18 carat gold with a full set of English hallmarks to interior. The outer hoop is inscribed with the details of the deceased on a black enamel ground between chased floral borders. Rev’d. Thos. Sikes Ob. 13 Dec. 1834 AE 69. The Reverend Sikes, Vicar of Guilsborough Church, was an associate of the Hackney Phalanx, whose theological and political outlook might best be described as High Church and Tory. The ring is size O and 1/2 [US 7 and 1/4] and the hoop is 1/3 of an inch wide. Very fine and immaculate.
