Stella cometa

Stella cometa

In 1835 Britain was gripped by comet fever. Halley’s Comet was due to make its appearance, an event that only occurred once every 75 years. In honour of the event jewels were made in comet form. This comet brooch is gold and silver set with bright rose-cut diamonds in foiled and closed back settings. It is one inch long and in a fitted case. The comet  appeared in the sky when Mark Twain was born in 1835.  Twain said, ‘I came in with Halley’s Comet… It is coming again … and I expect to go out with it… The Almighty has said, no doubt: ‘Now here are these two unaccountable freaks; they came in together, they must go out together.’
