Suffragette colours
A fine quality 15 carat gold Art Nouveau bracelet set with amethyst, peridot and moonstone, circa 1908. The bracelet is set with gems in the Suffragette colours – green for hope, purple for dignity and white for purity. Jewellers such Child & Child and Mappin & Webb along with department stores such as Selfridge’s and Liberty, seized a retail opportunity to align with a cause that by 1908 was sweeping the country. They created clothing and jewellery inspired by the Suffragette colours. In December 1909 Mappin and Webb issued a catalogue of ‘Suffragette jewellery’. Examples such as this bracelet were purchased by women with the intent of being worn in support of the cause. This stylish jewellery became an important part of identity for WSPU members, a way to communicate their solidarity without words. The bracelet is currently 7.5 inches long and 1/2 an inch wide. I can shorten it to a wrist of any smaller size by reducing the interconnecting chains. In fitted case and immaculate.
