A gold pendant containing a finely executed watercolour miniature of Theophila Palmer, circa 1775 -1780. Theophila was the niece of the artist Sir Joshua Reynolds. From the age of 13 she lodged with her uncle in London, of whom she was ‘enthusiastically and affectionately fond’. The feeling was clearly mutual, when Reynolds died in 1792 he left his niece a staggering £10,000 fortune in his will. The pendant measures 1 and 1/8 inches by 3/4 of an inch and is beautifully executed and immaculate.
