Not lost but gone before
An unusual permutation of a Neo-classical urn mourning ring, dated 1787. The head of the high carat gold ring is set with a gold and enamel urn, embellished with rose-cut diamonds, set silver. The shank has a two line inscription on a black enamel ground with the details of the deceased : Charlotta Cicel Obt 18 Jan 1787 AE 23 and also the motto : Not lost but gone before. The ring is size K and 1/2 [US 5 and 3/8] and the urn measures 2/3 of an inch by 2/3 of an inch. Rare with this two line motto and with enamel in near perfect condition.
Oh, there at last, life’s trials past,
We’ll meet our loved once more,
Whose feet have trod the path to God —
Not lost, but gone before.
