A Georgian mourning ring of exceptional quality from the Tony Dove Collection. The high carat scrolled gold hoop is inscribed on the obverse with the details of the deceased reserved on a white enamel ground : Walter Dovey AR Ob. 13 Feb 1761 Ae. 56. There is a maker’s mark WI to interior. Walter Dovey from the Parish of Claverly in Shropshire was one of five brothers. He died unmarried in 1761, as the employment of white enamel on the ring denotes. A copy of his will accompanies the ring. The ring is size T and 1/2 [US 10]. It is in such pristine condition I doubt it was ever worn.
