Bacchic theatre mask
An 18 carat gold ring hallmarked for Birmingham 1911 and set with an agate cameo carved in two strata of a Bacchic theatre mask. Bacchus or Dionysos was the god of wine, fertility, festivity and theatre. Wine had a religious focus in the cult of Bacchus, it could ease suffering, bring joy, and inspire divine madness. Festivals of Bacchus included the performance of sacred dramas enacting his myths, the initial driving force behind the development of theatre in Western culture. The ring is size L [US 5 and 1/2] and can be sized. Well carved and immaculate.
