Caduceus
A fine quality caduceus brooch, circa 1890. It is 18 carat gold, the wings set with 0.55 points of old-cut and rose-cut diamonds and a sapphire. The serpents are enamelled in green and red and there are natural pearls to the tip and base of the staff. The caduceus was the traditional wand of Hermes, with two serpents entwined around a winged staff. It is often used as a symbol of medicine and has ancient associations with commerce, eloquence, negotiation and wisdom. This caduceus measures 2 inches by 1.5 inches. Cased and immaculate.
