Aimer Sans Détour

Aimer Sans Détour

A fascinating French rebus love token ring, circa 1780. A rebus is a puzzle where sentiments are represented by a combination of images and letters to convey a secret message. The high carat gold shank supports a compartment set with a plaque of foiled cobalt blue glass. The plaque is surmounted by glass pearl letters ME, a sepia-inked 100, a glass pearl letter D and a depiction of a tower, under crystal. The rebus translates as : Aimer [ME] sans [100] détour [D and a tower] – love without turning. The ring is size L [US 5 and 1/2] and the head of the ring measures 1 and 1/8 inches by 3/4 of an inch. It is fine and wearable condition. For further examples of enigmatic 18th century rebus rings, see Chadour’s, Rings, The Alice and Louis Koch Collection.
