A fine quality caduceus pendant and brooch, circa 1890. It is high carat gold and silver and pavé set with Persian turquoise and old-cut diamonds. The caduceus is the traditional wand of Hermes, with two serpents entwined around a winged staff. It is often used as a symbol of medicine despite its ancient associations with trade, thieves, eloquence, negotiation and wisdom. This caduceus measures 1 and 3/4 inches by 1.5 inches. It is in its original fitted case and immaculate.
