Essex crystal bee

Essex crystal bumblebee

A spectacular, unusually large reverse carved intaglio crystal of a rare subject, a bumblebee, set to an 18 carat gold locket pendant, circa 1900. The technique of reverse intaglio crystal carving required great skill, first carving out a domed natural rock crystal in intaglio and then painting the carving in fine detail. The effect achieved is photo-realistic and the bumblebee appears to be trapped within the crystal. One expects to him to escape and fly off at any minute. The pendant, which is also a locket, measures 1.5 inches by 1 and 1/3 inches. Extremely fine intaglio carving, immaculate condition. For similar, see the Hull Grundy collection in the British Museum. This is only the third Essex bee I’ve had in 40 years and it is by far the largest and most impressive example.
