Georgian gimmel fede ring

Georgian gimmel fede ring

A superior and deliciously buttery 18 carat gold Georgian gimmel fede ring, circa 1820. As it was customary to exchange rings to mark the agreement of a business contract, so a ring, the annulus pronubus, would be given as a pledge of betrothal and marriage. A ring with a pair of clasped hands, the Dextrarum iunctio represented this pledge. This gimmel fede has on the outer hoop arms with clasped hands. When unclasped the engraved initials are revealed : J BT MA. The J and MA are Christian name initials and the BT in the centre are the family name initials. The ring is size R [US 8 and 5/8] and the band is 1/2 an inch wide. A solid, beautifully constructed and substantial ring in immaculate condition.
