Georgian harlequin pansy necklace
I have coveted this necklace ever since Olivia Collings and Ginny Dawes photographed it for their book Georgian Jewellery in 2007 and it’s finally in my possession. An 18 carat gold necklace circa 1800, set with a harlequin kaleidoscope of gems – garnets, amethysts and natural rock crystal foiled in a multiple array of colours. The effect created is a seamless line of pansies encircling the neck. The necklace is 16 and 3/4 of an inch long. The largest pansy front centre measures one inch by 3/4 of an inch and the smallest pansies next to the clasp measure 2/3 of an inch by 1/2 an inch. The necklace is illustrated on page 91 of Georgian Jewellery. Such a glorious example of Georgian pansies will only come my way once.
