Georgian planetary ring

A high carat gold ring circa 1820, the decorative scalloped shank supporting a head set with a variety of gemstones in foiled and closed back settings. According to G.F. Kunz in Rings For The Finger, gems associated with certain planets were believed to have positive astrological effects for the wearer. The gemstones represent the qualities of different planets, reflecting the keen interest in astrology and planetary influences at the time. The gems employed are : sapphire – Saturn, rock crystal – Venus, agate – Mars, quartz cat’s eye – spiritualism and intuition, spinel – Saturn, brown zircon – Jupiter, amethyst – Saturn, green zircon – Mercury, garnet – North Node, chrysoberyl – spiritualism and intuition, pearl – Moon, ruby – Sun, centre –  garnet, North Node. The ring is size M [US 6] and the head of the ring measures 3/4 of an inch by 2/3 of an inch. Rare and immaculate.
