Georgian acrostic regard heart
A rather luscious example of a Georgian regard heart padlock, circa 1820, probably the largest and most intricate example I have seen. It is 18 carat gold and redolent with symbolism. In the centre is a gem pansy heart spelling ‘regard’ in the acrostic manner utilising ruby, emerald, garnet, amethyst, ruby, diamond. The obverse is set with gold and silver anemone flowers which symbolised sincerity, peace and heartfelt wishes, and were often used in wedding bouquets. A gold coiled and entwined serpent, symbol of eternity, slithers around the top of the heart. There is a locket compartment to reverse. It is functioning opening padlock which can also be worn as a pendant. The heart is 2 and 1/3 inches in length and 1 and 1/3 inches wide at its widest point. A super example of this genre, in immaculate condition.
