Halley’s comet

Halley’s comet

A fine quality and unusually large and substantial brooch commemorating the passing of Halley’s comet in 1835. Throughout history comet sightings have been considered symbols of change and hope. Halley’s comet periodic return to the inner solar system has been observed and recorded since around 240 BC, but it was not until 1705 that the English astronomer Edmond Halley understood that these appearances were actually reappearances of the same comet. As a result of this discovery the comet was named after Halley. This comet is high carat gold and set with a 12 carat black dot natural colourless topaz and a smaller natural colourless topaz in foiled and closed back settings. It measures 1 and 1/4 inches by 1/2 an inch. Bright and immaculate, with the typical liveliness of colourless topaz.
