Medieval garnet ring

Medieval garnet ring

A high carat gold ring, circa 1300, set with its original cabochon garnet in a dished oval closed back setting. In the middle ages this gemstone revered for its protective power and vibrant colour.  E. Wallis Budge in Amulets and Superstitions describes the power of the garnet : An amulet of garnet protected a man from evil and terrifying dreams, and when danger approached it lost its brilliance and became dull. The shoulders of the ring are incised with a criss-cross pattern. It is size P and 1/2 [US 7 and 3/4] and in fine, original and most wearable condition.
