Memento mori skull ring
Fine quality and substantial memento mori skull ring dated 1723. The high carat gold hoop is enamelled to exterior with a skull amidst thistle flowers and foliage. Thistles in the language of mourning represented the crown of thorns and earthly sorrow. It is inscribed to interior : CR Obit 18 January 1723 with a maker’s mark. It is size N and 1/2 [US 6 and 3/4] and the hoop is 1/4 of an inch wide. The ring is substantial and in extremely fine and most wearable condition. A couple of very tiny dings on the edge where it would have been unearthed by a shovel or plough during excavation from the earth, but these only add to its charm and history.
