Early 19th century gold plaque ring set with a depiction of the Roman Colosseum in micromosaic. The technique used to create micromosaic works of art required great technical precision and each microscopic coloured glass tesserae functioned in the manner of a brush stroke in a painting. After the image was completed in an array of colours, the mosaic was abraded and waxed. The ring is size Q [US 8] and can be sized, and the micromosaic panel measures 1 and 1/4 by 3/4 of an inch. Fine quality mosaic work, in immaculate condition. For similar depictions, see Gabriel’s Micromosaics, the Gilbert Collection.
