Miniature peg doll

Miniature peg doll

A miniature peg doll in a pendant from Germany or Holland, circa 1880. Peg dolls were called “Dutch”dolls and the main centre for manufacture was Val Gardena. They had turned and painted heads and basic jointed pegged arms and legs. This is the first peg doll I have seen in such a miniature jewellery form. She was obviously much loved to be encased in a gold pendant, with presumably her owner’s initials engraved on the reverse. The pendant measures 3/4 of an inch by 1/3 of an inch. Charming little thing, immaculate.
