Pierrot

Pierrot

A fine moonstone carving of Pierrot, circa 1900, later set to a high carat gold ring. Pierrot, a figure from the Italian Commedia dell’arte, was a sad, melancholic clown with painted white face in a loose white smock who played foil to Harlequin. The ring is size J [US 4 and 5/8] and Pierrot is 3/4 of an inch tall. Exquisite carving on a miniature scale and immaculate.

Pierrot by Antione Watteau, (1684–1721). He stands apart from his troupe, isolated in the brilliant white of his costume, with the rest of the troupe behind him in a riot of sumptuous colour.
