A Roman agate intaglio carving, circa 3rd century AD, set to a later high carat gold shank. So highly prized were these ancient classical gems that in the Neo-classical era they were infilled with gold to preserve them. This carving depicts a well modelled sow, considered to bring good fortune. The ring is size O [US 7] and the head of the ring measures 3/4 of an inch by 2/3 of an inch. This piglet made me smile.
