Portuguese chrysoberyl ring
Large and imposing Portuguese chrysoberyl ring, circa 1780. The tapered high carat gold shank supports a head densely pavé-set with sea green chrysoberyl, the gems close set to draw light and refraction from the stones. The gold bead surround is typical of Portuguese jewels from this era. The ring is size P [US 7 and 1/2] and the head of the ring measures 1 and 1/4 inches by 3/4 of an inch. For similar examples from the era see Plate 123 in Five Centuries of Jewellery, National Museum of Ancient Art, Lisbon.
