Portuguese rock crystal

Portuguese rock crystal marquise ring

A late 18th century Portuguese marquise ring.  The high carat gold tapering shank with silver detail to its shoulders, supports a head set with natural rock crystal [colourless quartz]. The gems are foiled and close-set to create an unbroken mass of light, dazzling in candlelight. The gold bead surround is a typical feature of Portuguese jewels from this period. The ring is size M [US 6] and can be sized and the head of the ring measures 3/4 of an inch by 2/3 of an inch. Very fine quality, the rock crystals remain lively and bright. For rings of similar form, see the 18th century jewellery collection in the National Museum of Ancient Art, Lisbon.
