Portuguese topaz star

Portuguese topaz star pendant

In the 18th century Portugal possessed valuable ultramarine colonies which were the source of many precious gems. Topaz from Brazil came in a rainbow array of colours  – rich wine red, amber yellow, rose pink. Portuguese jewellers close-set the gems in foil backed mounts with artistic combinations of various tints and tones. This Imperial golden topaz star pendant and brooch is gold, circa 1780. The topaz are in foil backed, cut down settings and would have dazzled in candlelight. The pendant measures 1.5 inches by 1.5 inches and is shimmeringly immaculate.
