Rebus pendants

Rebus pendants

entendre Two enigmatic rebus pendants, circa 1900. A rebus is a puzzle where sentiments are represented by images or letters to convey a secret message. Rebuses constituted playful tokens of love and affection. Both these pendants are silver gilt with enamel mottoes. The first is inscribed : M moi 100 cc. M is for aime [love], moi for me, 100 – cent is French for 100 and sounds like sans, cc is for cessez. The rebus means love me endlessly. The second is inscribed : P venez. The P positioned above the word venez is a French wordplay meaning come on up [and see me]. This was a popular 19th century French puzzle used in romantic jewellery to convey a witty invitation. Both pendants measure 2/3 of an inch by 2/3 of an inch and are immaculate.
