Scarab swivel ring

Ancient scarab swivel ring

An ancient Egyptian carved amethyst scarab set to a high carat gold swivel ring mount from the early 19th century. The scarab, an ancient Egyptian symbol of regeneration and rebirth, was associated with  the Sun god Khepri, who could appear in the form of a scarab. The reverse of the scarab is incised with an antelope. Antelopes were associated with Sokar, the hawk or falcon god and carried his royal and overseer attributes. Antelope heads graced the prow of ceremonial boats that stood in temple sanctuaries, this decorative arrangement was considered sacred. The ring is size Q and 1/2 [US 8 and 1/4] and the scarab is 3/4 of an inch long and 1/2 an inch wide. Immaculate.
