Sub Rosa Lover’s Lips

Sub Rosa Lover’s Lips

Georgian high carat gold bracelet circa 1820, the central compartment enclosing a watercolour on ivory miniature of a lover’s lips. Georgian lover’s eye portraits are relatively scarce and this is only the second example I have seen of a lover’s lips. The lid of the compartment is engraved with a rose, indicating that the subject within is sub rosa, i.e. it is secret, confidential and not to be discussed. A superb piece redolent with symbolism.
