Tabby cat

A beautifully carved reverse intaglio crystal of a tabby cat set to an 18 carat gold and silver pendant with diamond surround, circa 1890. The technique of reverse intaglio crystal carving required meticulous skill, first carving out a domed rock crystal in intaglio and then painting the carving in fine detail. The effect achieved is photo-realistic, creating a 3D floating image when observed from the front. The cat is depicted wearing a gold bell on a blue satin ribbon, its nose pressed against the crystal. The reverse is mother of pearl backed. The pendant measures one inch by 3/4 of an inch and is immaculate.
